Sony World Photography 2021 – Gli scatti vincitori

Il fotografo Craig Easton con la serie “Bank Top” trionfa ai Sony Photography Awards.

La World Photography Organisation ha annunciato i vincitori assoluti del prestigioso Sony World Photography Awards 2021. A trionfare su tutti è stato lo stimato documentarista Craig Easton, (Regno Unito) per la sua serie intitolata “Bank Top”.

Premiati anche dieci vincitori per categoria, oltre al 2° e 3° posto della competizione Professional, nonché i vincitori assoluti delle competizioni Open, Student e Youth.

Bank Top, una serie nata dalla collaborazione con lo scrittore e accademico Abdul Aziz Hafiz, un’indagine sulle comunità del nord dell’Inghilterra, con un focus specifico sul quartiere tightknit di Bank Top a Blackburn.

Bank Top è il risultato dell’iniziativa “Kick Down the Barriers” del Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, un progetto avviato in risposta al ritratto offerto da numerosi media della città di Blackburn, definita d molti come “la più segregata in Gran Bretagna”. Cercando di sfidare questa narrativa, il museo ha invitato artisti e scrittori a collaborare con i residenti di vari quartieri e creare una rappresentazione solida e autentica delle loro comunità.

Nel corso di un anno Easton e Hafiz hanno lavorato a stretto contatto con gli abitanti locali esplorando storie ed esperienze di vita attraverso una serie di ritratti in bianco e nero accompagnati da testi. Privazione sociale, alloggio, disoccupazione, immigrazione, rappresentanza, questi alcuni dei temi trattati , un lavoro che contrasta le generalizzazioni semplicistiche, per raccontare in chive autentica lo spirito che anima queste comunità di persone.

Commentando la sua vittoria Easton ha affermato: “Sono lieto che questo lavoro sia stato riconosciuto dai Sony World Photography Awards. Fotografo per imparare, cercare di capire, documentare e condividere storie. È un privilegio poterlo fare e sfidare percezioni e stereotipi. Vedere queste storie di comunità sottorappresentate o travisate nel nord dell’Inghilterra ( zona dove vivo), ora riconosciute e condivise in tutto il mondo è meraviglioso. Grazie.
