L’MCA di Chicago presenta dal 23 Aprile al 25 Settembre 2016 un importante retrospettiva sui lavori di Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955), uno dei più grandi artisti viventi d’America. La mostra si concentra principalmente sulla pittura condotta nel corso degli ultimi 35 anni, dal suo seminale e inaugurale Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self (1980) alle sue più recenti esplorazioni della storia afroamericana.

Nato in Alabama prima del passaggio del Civil Rights Act contro la segregazione razziale, a vent’anni comincia il suo percorso artistico sotto la guida di Charles White, famoso per essere uno tra i primi pionieri della pittura black sui muri. Marshall porta avanti la sua missione, ritraendo i cosiddetti “uomini invisibili“, criticando il consolidato canone artistico occidentale.
Ha partecipato ad esibizioni internazionali in Europa e Nord America, i suoi dipinti si trovano in collezioni private e fondazioni, nonché in importanti collezioni pubbliche, tra cui la MCA di Chicago.
